Staff Retreat is now over. It was good to get everyone pumped for the semester and focused on what we're here for. Friday, between 2 of the services me and Cheryl went to Pink Houses (my site). Cheryl was the site captain for 10 years, and so she knows many of the kids quite well. And they most definitely remember her! We only had time to visit 2 families. The first family has about 11 kids. It was exciting cause they remembered me! One of the boys, Donell (he's about 15 I think) has a brain tumor. He's on medication to keep the seizures under control. The tumor can't be operated on. Please pray for him when you think of it.
We went to visit a girl Christina as well. She just had a baby on September 15th, and had just come home minutes before we came over to see her and her baby girl, Aliyah. The baby is so beautiful. So precious. It's a scary thought to think that Christina, a child, is now a mother. She's only 15 years old. These kids have it all backwards. You could call it "ghetto mentality", but I believe it goes so much deeper than that. A big reason why we do what we do. Not only do we give them morals for their lives, but we give them a chance to hear about God's love, which can drastically change their lives.
Earlier last week, one of the staff was walking down the street towards the Centre (the old hospital, that is being converted into the new Metro International headquarters where a handful of staff already live). He witnessed a man shot 3 times in the head on the street corner of our block where the Centre is. It's strange how things are around here. You get into such a comfortable groove here, that you forget the danger and how fast things can happen. But always, we're reminded of the danger of the streets here.
Off to bed for me now. Tomorrow I gotta transfer my licence over to a New York driver's licence. My last day off for the next 6 days. Looking forward to the work though....I don't know what to do with myself right now!
